“Super sweet” - JOHN KENNEDY (RADIO X, X-POSURE)
“Perfect for dispelling those lingering winter blues”– THE LINE OF BEST FIT
“This whirlwind of a modern day experimental R&B track is top notch in my book”– INDIE SHUFFLE

“Two” is the first taste of brand new material from Space Captain on Tru Thoughts, and it marks the dawn of a fresh phase for the Brooklyn band. Lifted from their forthcoming EP (due early 2016) for a standalone single release on 4th December, “Two” is an attention-grabbing and immersive song-within-a-song that charms and reels and shifts and swells like a gathering storm. An upfront free download of “Two” will launch the track to fans in late October.
In a period of open-minded experimentation that has seen them developing their sound via live shows and studio jams, Space Captain have alighted on a beautifully bold and progressive fusion of R&B and psychedelic rock with tentacles spinning out into soul, hip hop, electronica and noise. With singer/lyricist Maralisa Simmons-Cook exploring darker and more personal subjects, “Two” brings a commentary on materialism, city dwelling and anxiety while the band’s deepening connection is evident in a visceral, three-dimensional reflection of the themes. Bearing the hallmarks of the a cappella harmony groups of her teens, Simmons-Cook’s elastic, expressive vocals intertwine with equally arresting production from her band co-founder Alex Pyle. A catchy, languid R&B ballad is tantalisingly twisted by the glimmering tang of guitar, swirling harmonics and muscular drums, to bloom into a psychedelic indie-rock wig-out.
Space Captain joined the Tru Thoughts roster earlier this year amid a buzz which had already seen them supported across the likes of The Line Of Best Fit, Indie Shuffle and Revive Music. On the double A-side “Easier”/“Remedy” – July’s reissue of two acclaimed early tracks – their mix of ‘90s-leaning R&B production and jazz composition found a wider audience, with notably heavy play from new music guru John Kennedy on his XFM (now Radio X) X-posure show, and Don Letts (BBC 6Music). These fresh, early visions of the Space Captain sound left no doubt as to the band’s talent and potential, while only hinting at the huge artistic strides they would make on their new material.
Space Captain is psych-soul band on Tru Thoughts Records. New double singles 'Secret Garden / Back of My Mind' and 'Birthday Cards / Chester Springs' out now!
